Senthalir update – December 2005

We are very pleased to inform you that three new buildings have been opened by Fr James Pathinathan on the 26th November 2005. Approximately 130 children have moved into these buildings. They are very happy as they have more space than before. We shall update the site with more pictures and information when we receive them.

Senthalir update – August 2005

Since the Tsunami on 26 December 2004, our services to Children in North-East of Sri Lanka have escalated to unprecedented levels. As a result of the Tsunami, Senthalir home was completely destroyed and 111 children lost their lives. Since then, only 30 bodies had been recovered and identified and many hundreds of children have been left homeless. ACF-UK have bought 5.5 acres of land in Vallipunam, Udayarkuddu in the Northeastern region of Sri Lanka to build a new home for these children.

Arobanam’s appeal on 28 December 2004 was well received by many kind hearted people. You entrusted ACF-UK with £147,000 to rebuild Senthalir (Tender Sprout). You can see below how your hard earned money was utilised. ACF-UK has already contributed £110,000 towards the relocation of the new Senthalir (Tender Sprout) home. The management committee of ACF-UK hereby wishes to thank all the organisations and individuals for their kind contributions to the Senthalir Project (a list of donors can be found here). 88 children have already been moved into temporary huts on the site while three permanent buildings are being built, which are nearing completion to house nearly 125 children and their helpers.

Our work is not yet finished. We have a long way to go. Building costs have escalated mainly due to unforeseen site condition and increased material costs. The small house, which was supposed to cost £7,000, has gone up to £13,000.

For the next phase, funds are required to construct a Kitchen/ Dining Hall. The site also needs to be secured by proper fencing and some landscaping work needs to be undertaken. In addition to this Centre for Women’s Development and Rehabilitation (CWDR) is proposing to build 8 more houses that are needed to house all those children who are waiting to join this new home.

At current estimates we need a further sum of £174,000. Within this site we also need to construct wells, a water tank and ideally a play area should also be provided. We are still waiting for estimates regarding these works. There is a possibility that the Norwegian Government may fund one of the large buildings. A foundation stone is already been laid for this. No decision is made with regards to which building they will fund.

With your help we will complete the project. Please continue to support us.

We have identified another area in Batticaloa called Kokaddicholai where there are large number of children in desperate need for help after the Tsunami. ACF-UK has purchased a 3-acre land to build a branch of Senthalir. We have plans to construct one large building in the near future depending on your response with funds for this project.
